North Cumbria University Hospital North Cumbria University Hospital - Cumberland Infirmary

Children's Services

Fairfield Ward

The health needs of young people are significantly different from those of adults. The provision of child-friendly services depends on understanding their special needs. Parents, doctors, nurses, therapists and others involved in delivering care to children and young adults must take these needs into account.

We aim to provide:

  • A child-friendly environment with playroom and the service of a qualified hospital play specialist
  • Nursing staff specifically trained in the care of sick children
  • All children awaiting surgery are invited to visit the ward making an appointment direct with the Play Specialist prior to admission
  • Every child who is admitted has the right to have a parent or responsible carer resident with them
  • There are 10 single rooms equipped with bed, cot, locker, wardrobe, easy chair, television and DVD player with a variety of discs for children of all ages
  • Single room accommodation is normally available but as the ward caters for all paediatric emergencies this may, on rare occasions, not be possible
  • A parents' kitchen with fridge and microwave is provided for parents' use, as are toilets and bathrooms
  • Refreshments/meals for parents may be taken whilst your child is on the ward by ringing The Cumbrian Clinic prior to the admission to arrange
  • The staffing levels aim to provide 1/3-6, depending on workload
  • There are no restrictions on visiting for family members. Other friends may visit between 2pm and 8pm daily
