How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Beacon Hill ensures that close contact with local Primary schools is maintained and strives to collect all pertinent information during transition. The SENCo will attend any Annnual Reviews from Y5 onwards for perspective students. Within school, all students have baseline assessments and CATs testing that will be fully analysed for areas of needs. Regular SEN time within staff meetings and INSET gives all staff the opportunity to raise any concerns about students directly with the SENCo. Also, parents are encouraged to make contact with the SENCo regarding any issues or concerns that they may have.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Support for students is on an individualised basis. It could be as in-class support, 1:1 Keyworker time, small group withdrawal for basic skills, nurture group support, online individualised courses, personalised curriculum or take any other form as appropriate to student and their needs.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

The content and structure of the curriculum can be modified to meet the needs of students. External advice and permission from Governors would be sought for complex cases.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Students with EHCPs and those undergoing assessment will have a Passport of Learning. This contains information for teachers and how to differentiate to meet the needs of that student. It also has significant input from parents and the student. This document has targets broken down to ultimately meet the outcomes for the end of the Key Stage. These targets are monitored by staff each term and reviewed and by students three times a term. This information is reported to parents termly with an updated Passport featuring new targets where applicable.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

Beacon Hill has an outstanding level of Pastoral care and all efforts are made to meet the well-being needs of every student. For those with SEN, there are also weekly Keyworker meetings that focus on self-esteem, self-confidence, reflection and student voice.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

The school utilises all the available support from County Council Specialist teams and external support from a wide variety of providers.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

The whole team has access to a vast area of resources and guidance for all levels of SEN. INSET delivered by the SENCO and/or external providers is regular. Staff get weekly advice of differentiation and strategies to support students with different needs.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Every effort is made to ensure that all students have access to all opportunities available at Beacon Hill.

All efforts are made to ensure that students are fully informed and prepared for their next steps within education.

 

 

 

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Beacon Hill follows the guidance delivered within the EHCPs to allocate and organise support to meet needs.

 

 

 

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

This is largely led by the detail within the EHCP. However, for those who do not have an EHCP, support is discussed and generated within discussion with school, parents and student.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents are very welcome to be as involved in school life and the education of their child as they wish to be!
