CAP Debt Help Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre - Whitehaven

If you are feeling weighed down by debt, then we can help. You may think your situation is impossible, but there is hope. Our friendly team will give you a listening ear and provide a real solution to your debts and it’s all completely free. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a debt-relief charity that started in 1996 and the Whitehaven centre opened in 2013. Nationally our award-winning, professional service has helped thousands of people in situations like yours to find a way to get back on your feet and go debt-free.

What will happen when I contact CAP?

When you call our free number (0800 328 0006), you’ll speak to someone from the CAP team who’ll arrange an initial appointment with Jonathan, your CAP Whitehaven Debt Coach. You’ll be visited in your own home, a budget will be created for your particular situation, your creditors (the people you owe money to) will be negotiated with and payments agreed (including rent, council tax, energy companies) and you’ll be given support right through until the day that you become debt-free.

If you can gather any paperwork to do with your debts and have these ready before the meeting, this will make the process a lot quicker. Jonathan will happily sort through it all, and send it off to our head office, where they’ll work out a budget and the best route out of debt for you, to see you through to financial freedom and beyond.

Case study

L is a single Mum who came to Christians Against Poverty for help with her situation: with her pregnant teenage daughter they were due to be evicted the following week. We accompanied L to court and the fact that she had contacted CAP for help with her situation resulted in the court suspending the eviction order. L stuck to her budget and paid into her CAP Plan so that her creditors received the agreed payments that CAP had set up on her behalf. We at CAP Whitehaven supported with things like a week’s shopping, baby clothes when her little grand-daughter was born and so on. Today L is debt-free, the haggard, haunted look she had when we first met has been replaced by a sparkle in her eyes and a spring in her step, she manages her money better, is currently looking for a new job and has even been out with the Centre Manager on client visits as a support worker to help those who are suffering as she used to.

An in depth and personal face to face service to help people deal with their debts.

CAP’s debt help service is specifically tailored to help financially and socially disadvantaged people. Geared to accommodate those with complex needs, the combination of one to one appointments, a befriending service and in-depth counselling empowers individuals to break free from credit dependency and work their way out of debt. 91% of people who used CAP’s debt help service described it as life transforming or a great help.

The service includes budgeting, specialist advice, creditor negotiation, a full insolvency service and Debt Management Plans. Clients using our Debt management plan make one monthly payment into their plan to cover their debt repayments, which CAP then distributes to their creditors. This support is ongoing until the client is debt free.

If needed clients will be provided with access to emergency aid whilst we work with them towards a sustainable situation
