Our Ethos

Step inside our village school and into a haven for learning. Set in magnificent surroundings, Bassenthwaite Primary School provides a unique learning environment which, whilst preserving its legacy from the 19th century, is resourced and equipped to deliver an action packed stimulating curriculum into the 21st century. 

We aim to present exciting challenges and enriched experiences. Wherever possible we maximise our own external environment creatively to fulfil sporting and curriculum needs. It is our outdoor classroom. Each child benefits from an excellent child/teacher ratio and is supported to develop his or her personal academic potential. 

A very caring family ethos prevails allowing all our children to thrive emotionally and develop good self-esteem and interpersonal skills.

We link with other small schools in the area to provide a comprehensive programme of activities such as outdoor pursuits, residential urban visits, sporting fixtures and theatre visits.

This school provides a broad and balanced curriculum for all children, which is differentiated to meet individual needs and abilities. 

Children may have SEND throughout, or at any time during their school career.  This policy ensures that curriculum planning and assessment takes account of the type and extent of the difficulty experienced by the child. 

Teachers take into account in their planning a child’s special educational needs or disabilities, and the provision made therefore enables them to participate effectively in all curriculum and assessment activities, in addition to broader aspects of school’s life.

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

School staff continually assess pupils. When staff have concerns regarding a pupil's progress discussions will take place between the class teacher and school SENCO and parents. An IPP (Individual pupil plan) could then be set up to address the pupil's learning needs. IPPs are reviewed termly between class teachers and parents.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Support is provided in a number of ways in addition to differentiated work within a normal class setting. Teaching assistants provide small group support both within class and by withdrawing pupils where appropriate. 

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

When planning the curriculum teachers take into account the different learning needs and learning styles of different pupils. A range of teaching strategies will be used including oral, visual and kinaesthetic approaches as well practical methods.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Pupil's progress is assessed on a regular basis and recorded on Scholarpack, a system which maps pupil progress and highlights areas of strength and weakness. Other assessments and measures of progress can also be made including reading and spelling assessments. Homework is set on a regular basis. Staff welcome parents to discuss pupil progress and parents evenings/ reports are carried out.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

All class teachers and other school staff are responsible for pupil's well being and parents can approach teachers or the head teacher if they have any concerns.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

The school has an experienced SENDCO and well qualified teachers and teaching assistants. In addition the school has access to Educational Psychologists and Specialist Teachers in areas such as Autism, Speech, Language and Communication, Visual/ Hearing Impairment and severe learning difficulties

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Staff have regular training on special needs issues. The SENDCO has attended many courses relating to changes in SEN in the last 2 years including training on mental health and this knowledge is being cascaded to other staff.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Bassenthwaite provides a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including the use of the extensive school grounds, visits to sites of local interest and also residential visits

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

School is a single storey building with level access suitable to wheelchairs including ramps to the playground where needed.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Close liaison takes place between school staff and staff from Keswick School when pupils are in Y6, and also between staff from other schools when moves take place before Y6.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Head teacher, governors and school business manager meet to monitor and allocate special needs provision. The SENDCO plans the special needs support timetable in liaison with class teachers and the head to ensure efficient use of teaching assistants time to best meet the identified needs of pupils. Regular monitoring of pupil needs and provision take place and changes made where needed to meet pupil's changing needs.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Through liaison between SENDCO, head and class teacher, and where appropriate support services such as Educational Psychologists, Specialist teachers etc.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents are always welcomed in to discuss their pupil's learning needs and support. Meetings are held to review IPPs termly and also when statements of special educational needs/ Education Health and care plans are being set up or reviewed. Parent consultations and/ or reports are provided termly but more informal arrangements can be made at any time through discussions with the class teacher or SENCO where appropriate.
